I just saw a young boy, around 6 or 7, accidentally spill a slushee all over the place at Target. There was blue and red slush everywhere—on the floor, the table, and all over! The boy quickly looked at what I think was his dad and said sorry. But instead of getting upset, his dad calmly said, “Hey, it happens. Let’s get some napkins, and I’ll show you how to clean it up.” They went to grab napkins, and the dad helped him clean up the mess.
As they threw the napkins away, the dad told his son, “You’re going to be a person for a long time, and you have a smart brain. It’s important to be aware of what you’re doing. So next time, just pay a little more attention to your surroundings to avoid accidents. We can try to stop things like this from happening, but it’s okay if they do. Just take responsibility for your mistakes, and cleaning up will be easy. I know big messes can seem overwhelming, and you might feel like you can’t handle it alone, but it’s always okay to ask for help. There’s nothing wrong with asking for help when you need it.”
I was really impressed. That’s what good parenting looks like! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
