Last year, my son got suspended from school. Three boys surrounded him and started bullying him. He stayed calm and tried to walk away, but one of them blocked his path.
Then, one of the boys said two horrible things that changed my son’s life. He said, “I’m glad your mom’s in a wheelchair. And I hope one of her seizures kills her.” You see, our family has already suffered a big loss.
In April, it will be 11 years since my daughter, his sister, passed away when she was just 14 months old. So hearing this boy say he hoped I would die was too much for my son. He turned to the boy in charge and punched him right in the nose.
The school didn’t care what the boy had said—they suspended my son because he fought back. So I took him out for ice cream. There are times when words really do go too far, and I fully support my son’s choice to finally say, “Enough.”
He knows that hitting someone has consequences, but he also knows that in life, there will be moments when he needs to stand up for what’s right. And I’ll always be there to support him when he does.
